Sonnenhaft
Sonnenhaft “Bearing the essence of the sun” is a series of works on the correspondence between light as a physical phenomenon and the sense of sight as a subjective impression, translated by Goethe as: ‚If the eye were not sun-like, / It could never behold the sun.
The ever-changing light plays a pivotal role here, as it constantly transforms objects and perceptions in countless ways. This mirrors the universal concept of the infinite essence present in all things.
For me, observing the light and changes around me is observing time. Accordingly, as the external landscape changes, so does my internal landscape, and therefore I become part of this ongoing process. The changes in colour nuances are suggestive; they represent inner perceptions and states of mind.
The process of my painting is a progressive exploration of my inner landscapes, which are both actual and abstract. They are composed of memories that are like ‚photographic prints‘, which are then overlaid by time with sedimentary layers of new, moving impressions. In my painting I use a process of erasing and building like nature does. I like to convey my message through the light of my relief works, passing it to the eyes of others and then on to their inner selves.
Wär nicht das Auge sonnenhaft,
Die Sonne könnt es nie erblicken;
Läg nicht in uns des Gottes eigne Kraft,
Wie könnt uns Göttliches entzücken?……
If the eye were not sun-like,
It could never behold the sun
And if God’s own power did not dwell within us,
How can the divine delight us?……
Si l’œil n’était pas semblable au soleil,
Il ne pourrait jamais voir le soleil ;
Si la force même de Dieu ne résidait pas en nous,
Comment le divin pourrait-il nous émerveiller ?
